Born in St. Johns Newfoundland Canada, Shawn Ambrose hit the ground running and as a Navy brat hopping around a lot in his early years with brief stops around the world before finally settling in San Diego. Sometime between his paper route and ice hockey practice Shawn Ambrose managed to find time to surf and soon discovered that his next door neighbor Pat Farris had worked for G&S in the early sixties out of Larry’s parents garage. Before long Pat was overseeing Shawn as he shaped his first few boards in the seventh grade on barstools along the side of the house. Shawns passion for surfboards continued for several years through time in college and the fire sprinkler industry ( big ups local 669 ) but he couldn’t get surfboards out of his system and in the mid eighties he spent time working with Joe Roper’s repair and later ran a successful ding repair business of his own. It was this business where he had his first exposure to the bank of knowledge that was the Rusty factory where Shawn Ambrose did repairs and made a general nuisance of himself until they had to hire him. After several important years at Rusty, Shawn Ambrose jumped ship to take over Head Shaper duties at Dewey Weber where he was responsible for bringing back the Weber Performer in the mid nineties. He also spent some time at G&S before venturing out solely on his own. Since then Shawn Ambrose has taken it upon himself to become a Journeyman at every aspect of board building especially the lost art of resign color and pinlines. How many shapers have built thousands of boards all the way through? Shawn has taken this knowledge and trained a staff of well schooled craftsmen. "We like to build boards one at a time as if they are one of our own". As of late Ambrose Surfboards has been shaping a lot of state of the art EPS blanks and epoxy resins to provide lively strong and light surfboards that are more ECO Friendly! Ambrose Surfboards is among the very few manufacturers offering resign color in epoxy for that retro look .
